Born out of grief and a commitment to giving back, the Troy and Baden Biddle Foundation launched its first initiative with a focus on strengthening the mental resilience of student-athletes.

The foundation quickly found the perfect advocate—someone well-acquainted with discovering “strength within”—and it didn’t take long for former Seattle Sounders standout Steve Zakuani to answer the call.

“It’s been a very long time since I agreed to go and speak at an event,” Zakuani shared. “The moment I was told the theme for this event tonight, and I knew it involved young people, I said yes right away.”

“Steve’s story is compelling for a number of reasons,” said foundation president Amanda Horn. “His journey encompasses both his youth and professional career, and much of his post-soccer work is dedicated to helping young people, which aligns perfectly with the foundation’s mission.”

Zakuani, the first overall pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft by the Sounders, has taken on numerous roles since retiring from professional soccer in 2014. The former player, now an author, broadcaster, and briefly a high school coach, felt compelled to return to motivational speaking for an Oct. 15 event at Bainbridge High School.

Though now one of Seattle’s most iconic soccer figures, Zakuani grew up in London. “I knew what I wanted to become in my life—that I had to play professional soccer,” he said. “That was my dream from age five. I would watch these players on TV and go with my dad to games on the weekends.”

Through his career, Zakuani learned that even the strongest athletes can be affected by mental health struggles. Icons like Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney, and Danny Rose have all opened up about their battles with depression and mental health issues.

Seeing his idols face such challenges shocked him. “Watching them perform week in and week out, I never would have guessed they were going through what they went through.”

This revelation inspired him not only to share his story but to revisit his own experiences—reflecting on moments of struggle, mental challenges, limited resources, and the journey toward accepting his feelings.

“We all face challenges, even elite athletes,” Horn emphasized. “There are people, resources, and tools available to help you find your way. Steve’s inspiring journey through life is a powerful example of overcoming adversity and rising above the difficulties life presents.”
